Exterior coatings are designed to provide protection from the harsh environment of outdoor weathering, especially the deterioration caused by UV radiation. For all types of substrates, UV Protection is critical to the long-term performance of the substrate and the coating that protects it.
One of the main influences on the coatings performance is the amount and type of UV absorbers used in the coatings. However, conventional organic UV absorbers are prone to degradation and do not provide the long-term protection an inorganic UV absorber, such as Nano Zinc Oxide provides.
Incorporating NanoArc® Zinc Oxide or NanoArc® Cerium Oxide provides long-term protection from harmful UV radiation in harsh environments.
Consumers prefer the appearance of natural wood and do not want to mask color and beauty but, the current UV Protection of a totally clear finish is unacceptable. Adding NanoArc® Zinc Oxide or NanoArc® Cerium Oxide into a clear finish enables a long lasting, totally clear finish which is the “holy grail” of the industry. The particles will also provide extended protection in semi-transparent stains. The benefit is shown in the following outdoor testing of a water-based clear finish.
UV radiation is known to contribute to the chemical modification of exposed paint surfaces resulting in loss of gloss, color change, chalking, flaking and eventually destruction of the film.
NanoArc® Zinc Oxide and NanoArc® Cerium Oxide absorb UV light to provide enduring film protection in exterior architectural paint. In addition to appearance, the particles help improve adhesion, tannin blocking and provide improved coating durability.
For industrial applications, UV absorbers provide long-term gloss retention and color fastness. Utilizing NanoArc® Zinc Oxide and NanoArc® Cerium Oxide keeps damaging UV radiation away from the polymer or paint layer that they are protecting and will not impart color change, especially in deeper colors.
